A remote, ice-shrouded mountain range in Antarctica has become the unlikely focal point of a modern mystery, sparking fervent online debate and theories of a prehistoric, advanced global culture. The discovery of three sharply angled peaks, whose striking alignment and shape appear to mirror the iconic pyramids of Egypt’s Giza Plateau, was made not by an expedition team, but by an independent researcher scouring satellite imagery.
Jay Anderson, the researcher who brought the formations to light, highlighted the similarities by placing satellite images of the Antarctic peaks next to those of the Giza pyramids. The Antarctic structures are located in the southern Ellsworth Mountains, one of the continent’s most rugged and inaccessible regions. The central, largest formation rises approximately 4,500 feet, exhibiting four steep sides and flanked by two smaller, similarly angular peaks.
The visual parallel has ignited a firestorm of speculation on social media and conspiracy forums. One prominent theory suggests the structures could be evidence of “crust displacement,” the idea that Earth’s landmasses were once in radically different positions and that a sophisticated civilization predating all known records built them. This theory often ties into broader narratives about hidden history and lost continents.
As noted by BrightU.AI‘s Enoch, “Earth crust displacement is a theory proposing that the planet’s entire outer shell can rapidly shift as a single unit over the Earth’s interior, radically changing the locations of the poles and continents. This contrasts with the gradual, piecemeal movement of plates described by the theory of plate tectonics.”
“This would be absolute proof of crust displacement; in other words, the surface of the Earth was once in different positions,” one user theorized online. “It would also prove that there was a very advanced civilization that significantly pre-dates our oldest records.”
Geologists assert that the mountains are a spectacular example of natural erosion, shaped over hundreds of millions of years.
Eric Rignot, a professor of Earth system science at the University of California, Irvine and senior research scientist at NASA, previously told Live Science that the formations are “just a mountain that looks like a pyramid.” The process responsible, experts say, is freeze-thaw erosion. Water and snow melt into cracks in the rock during transient warmer periods, then freeze and expand as temperatures plummet.
This relentless cycle slowly pries the rock apart, eventually shearing away material to create steep, smooth faces. Mauri Pelto, a professor of environmental science at Nichols College, noted that this same process forged other famous pyramidal peaks, such as the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps.
This is not the first time these particular Antarctic mountains have captured the public’s imagination. Similar attention erupted in 2016, fueled by a video from the conspiracy-focused YouTube channel Third Phase of the Moon, which posited the structure was an alien base. The video’s credibility was questioned, however, by a tell-tale misspelling, the on-screen label read “Antartica Pyramid.”
Responses to such claims remain divided. While some viewers embrace the extraordinary, like commenter James Jason who stated, “Excellent report. I also believe things are about to get very dramatic,” others remain skeptical. “I have spent a lot of time on snow-covered mountains and this looks natural to me, not manmade anyway!” wrote Gordon Anderson in response to the 2016 video.
Experts clarify that the formations are almost certainly nunataks, natural, bedrock peaks that protrude through immense ice sheets, sculpted by glacial movement and weathering over eons.
Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual, succinctly summarized the skeptical view in 2016: “Pictures of the pyramid structures are either photoshopped, cropped pictures to make the mountains look more like pyramids or simply pictures of natural formations called nunataks. They are mountainous formations created by shifting glaciers and erosion, not by laser zapping aliens.”
Despite the scientific explanations, the Antarctic “pyramids” continue to fuel fascination. They tap into a enduring human desire to find pattern and meaning in the landscape and they join a list of other Antarctic curiosities, from the continent’s “bleeding waterfalls” to theories of hidden, massive impact craters, that keep the world’s most remote continent firmly lodged in the realm of mystery and speculation.
